Happy Holly Days! In the small town of Cratersville, where I grew up, this greeting was offered from Shop-Till-You-Drop-Friday (when shopping for the Holly Days began in ernest) all the way to Frost Flower Day (when people nursed their hangovers from the night before while watching flower-covered floats on TV).
During these festive days, the denizens of Cratersville participated in all kinds of merriment. There was something about the shortening days outside that makes us linger with family and friends inside. We hung lights, we festooned anything that didn’t move with greenery, we drank nog (spiked and not), we ate way too many holiday cookies, we made wishes for the new year, we went shopping.
During this time, as my little creatures became more numerous, they found ways to celebrate too. One piece of magic they contributed to the season was ReBoxing Day—the day that they took all of the discarded wrapping paper, ribbons and boxes and made some pretty cool gifts of their own.
No matter what circumstances this time of year finds you, just remember that the Magic is there—waiting to be discovered. All you have to do is Wish Upon a Star, Fill Your Heart with Joy, and Keep Believing that Next Year will be Better than the Last.
