It started out as a play on words, a cheeky suggestion to my mom that instead of a BIRTHday party, we should throw my sister a BIRDday party.
My sister, Poppy, had an early love for birds, and I had an early love for wordplay. It was a match made in heaven—if heaven were a place of birds and corny phrases—and from that moment on every birthday became an occasion where each of us would try to outdo the other at throwing the best BIRDday party.
Poppy’s winter-centric BIRDday parties always featured cold-weather birds like penguins, robins and snow geese, along with the odd snow-breathing dragon (according to Poppy, birds were just dragons going around incognito sort of like superheroes going around pretending that they are just your average joe schmoes living down the street).
My summer-centric BIRDday parties featured every other kind of bird—especially flightless ones like dodos, quirky ones like chickens, and birds wearing hats (I have a special place in my soul for birds that wear hats).
So, as another birthday rolls around (June 21 if you’re wondering), I thought I might give you some BIRDday inspiration for that next bird-centric bash you throw.
