Spring has sprung. And it’s time to celebrate!
When I was growing up, Carnival Day was one of four carnival-themed days during the year where theTravelers of the Gypsy Grove joined the denizens of Cratersville to celebrate the change in seasons with a deliciously boisterous bash. Part music festival, part street scene, part creative chaos, Carnival Day was a technicolor dream where spring escaped the bounds of Gypsy Hill Park and flooded our barren desert town with flowers, trees and leaves of every sort. Kids came in costumes.
My sister and I savored our freedom from daily stricture by wandering the packed streets dressed in the bohemian attire we usually reserved for the Gypsy Grove while snacking on the sweets forbidden to us there. Everything was reversed. Even our father’s theater went dark for the day so he could enjoy the real world and perform a little street magic—just for fun. Beads and doubloons were tossed from floats like rain from the gods.
We were dripping in our collected treasure by the time we made it home. It was magical. It was sublime. It was everything a warm, freshly minted spring day should be. Best of all it was memorable, not just for the fantastical extravagance of it, but the laid back, being part of the community aspects of it as well. We found fun in the everyday by getting lost in the wonder of merriment. Isn’t that what celebrating’s all about?
Wishing you a glorious season of flowers, sweet tweets and love.
